Declawing Alternatives

Protecting mind, body, and paws

We believe in protecting your cat's health and well-being — mind, body, and paws. That's why we do not offer declaw surgery.

About Declawing

A declaw (onychectomy) is a surgical amputation of the last bone of each toe and the attached claw.

Studies have shown declawed cats may be prone to arthritis later in life, and it is now illegal in St. Louis County to declaw cats.

Cat claws serve several important functions including hunting, marking territory, and defense. Cats also scratch to condition their claws, stretch their limbs, and sometimes to cope with stress. Claws are a physically, socially, and emotionally vital part of every cat.

Why Cats Scratch

  • Natural behavior

Scratching helps cats remove the outer sheath of their claws, keeping them healthy and sharp.

  • Marking territory

Cats have scent glands in their paws. Scratching leaves both a visual mark and a scent message.

  • Stretching and exercise

Scratching provides a full-body stretch that helps keep muscles flexible and joints healthy.

  • Stress relief

Scratching can be a way for cats to release tension or cope with changes in their environment.

Alternatives to Declawing

  • Keep Nails Trimmed

Regular nail trims reduce harm to household items. We are happy to provide a demonstration at the clinic or can provide this service with a quick 15-minute appointment. Proper feline nail trimmers should be used to prevent splintering of the claws.

  • Protect Furniture

Make the couch an unattractive place for scratching. Try double-sided tape on surfaces to deter scratching. Other materials such as plastic wrap, foil, and citrus-scented spray may also help. Couches made of microfiber material appear less desirable to cats.

  • Provide Appropriate Scratching Posts

Place posts in areas your cat likes to scratch, and use toys, catnip, and sprays to attract cats to the posts. Feliway pheromone products may help if your cat scratches due to stress. Scratchers come in multiple styles and textures — sisal, rough fabric, and cardboard — and can be vertical or horizontal.
