Stress-Free Carrier Training

Most cats don’t hate the vet — they hate the carrier. A little practice at home goes a long way toward making vet visits calmer for both of you.

Two-week training timeline

  1. 2 weeks before visitLeave the carrier out in a common room with the door open. Place a soft towel or blanket inside.
  2. 10 days beforeAdd a few treats and your cat’s favorite toys inside. Reward any sniffing or stepping in.
  3. 1 week beforeStart feeding meals inside the carrier with the door propped open.
  4. 3 days beforeBriefly close the door for 30–60 seconds while your cat is eating. Open before any anxiety builds.
  5. Day of visitSpray the bedding with Feliway 15 minutes before loading. Drape a towel over the carrier in the car to reduce visual stress.

Extra tips from our team

  • Hard-shell carrier with a top-opening lid is far easier than a soft bag — both for loading and for the vet exam.
  • Never store the carrier in the basement and only bring it out for vet trips. Cats learn the pattern fast.
  • In the car, secure the carrier with a seatbelt on the floor behind the passenger seat — never the front seat.
  • Cover the carrier with a light towel in the waiting room to give your cat a hiding spot.
  • For cats who panic at handling, ask us about gabapentin — a safe, mild oral medication given the night before and morning of the visit.
