How to Prepare for Your Cat's Vet Visit

A little preparation goes a long way. These checklists help your visit run smoothly — for you, your cat, and our team.

Before you leave home

  • Confirm your appointment time and bring your confirmation number.
  • Fast your cat for 2–4 hours before the visit (makes handling easier and reduces stress vomiting).
  • Spray your carrier with synthetic feline pheromones (Feliway) 15–30 minutes before loading.
  • Place a worn shirt or familiar blanket inside the carrier for comfort.
  • Write down your cat's symptoms or any behavior changes you've noticed.
  • Note any medications, supplements, or diet changes since the last visit.
  • Collect a fresh stool sample in a zip-lock bag if this is a wellness exam.

What to bring

  • Your cat's vaccination records (especially if this is a first visit).
  • A list of current medications, dosages, and how often you give them.
  • Any lab results or records from a previous vet.
  • Pet insurance information or your account number if you have one.
  • A fresh stool sample for annual wellness exams (collected within 12 hours).
  • Photos or video of concerning behavior — hard-to-replicate symptoms are easier to diagnose this way.

At the clinic

  • Keep your cat in the carrier in the waiting room — it feels safer than being held.
  • Place the carrier on a chair or lap, not the floor (less exposure to other animals).
  • If your cat is anxious, ask to wait in an exam room immediately upon arrival.
  • Speak softly and avoid sudden movements during the exam.
  • It's okay to ask the vet to slow down and explain things — we're here for questions.

Questions to ask your vet

  • Is my cat at a healthy weight?
  • Are there any vaccines or preventatives due or overdue?
  • Should I be concerned about dental health?
  • Are there any diet changes I should consider?
  • What signs should prompt an emergency call before the next visit?
