Surgery Day Checklist

Use this checklist for any procedure that involves anesthesia — spay/neuter, dental cleanings, mass removals, and more.

The night before

  • Pick up all food after 10pm — water is fine to leave out.
  • Confirm drop-off time with our team if you haven’t already.
  • Charge your phone — we’ll call when your cat is ready to go home.
  • Make sure your carrier is clean and lined with a soft towel.

The morning of

  • No breakfast — fasting reduces anesthesia risk.
  • Water can stay available until you leave.
  • Give any medications only if specifically instructed by us.
  • Bring a current medication list and any home food if requested.
  • Plan to arrive at your scheduled drop-off time (typically 7:30–8:30am).

Bringing your cat home

  • Keep your cat indoors and confined to a quiet, warm room for 24 hours.
  • Offer a small meal (¼ to ½ normal portion) a few hours after returning home. Full appetite returns by the next day.
  • Check the incision site twice daily for redness, swelling, or discharge.
  • Prevent licking with an e-collar — we provide one at discharge.
  • No baths for 10–14 days.
  • Limit jumping and rough play for 7–10 days (this is the hardest part!).
  • Give pain medication as directed — even if your cat seems fine.

Call us right away if you notice

  • Incision opens, bleeds, or has discharge
  • Persistent vomiting or refusal to eat after 24 hours
  • Severe lethargy or hiding beyond 24 hours
  • Trouble urinating or straining in litter box
  • Any concern at all — we’d rather hear from you
